 The 9(g) or Pre-Arranged Employee Visa Commercial is the most common type of work visa availed by foreign nationals engaged in gainful employment in the Philippines.  This visa entitles the holder multiple entries and exits into and out of the country while working with a company registered or licensed to do business and existing under Philippine laws.  With the 9g visa, the foreigner is entitled to legitimately work and stay in the country for a duration approved by the Bureau of Immigration.

 A foreign national who intends to work in the Philippines is required by the government to secure an Alien Employment Permit (AEP) from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). This permit authorizes a foreign national to engage in gainful activities provided that no domestic manpower is available for the particular designation. 

 The 9(a) or Temporary Visitor’s Visa is a non-immigrant visa issued to foreign nationals who come to the Philippines for a short period of time, whether for tourism, business or medical purposes. Most foreign nationals are given a 30-day period to stay in the country upon arrival, but that initial stay can be as few as 7 days and as many as 59 days, depending on the visitor’s country of origin. This initial stay can be extended to a maximum stay of 16 months. 

 The Special Work Permit (SWP) is a work permit intended for short term assignments/employment of up to 6 months. A locally registered company must be willing to serve as the Petitioner. The SWP is good for 3 months during the initial application and extendible for another 3 months. During the course of the SWP validity, the status of the foreign national remains as tourist. Thus, tourist visa extension must be undertaken if necessary. 

 A Provisional Work Permit (PWP) is issued by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to foreign nationals who currently hold temporary visitor visas but wish to commence work in the Philippines while the approval of their employment visa application, either the 9g or 9d, is in progress.  A PWP is normally valid for three (3) months from the date of issuance or until the 9g visa is issued, whichever comes first. 

Foreign nationals seeking to work for PEZA or BOI-registered companies in the Philippines must obtain a 47(a)(2) visa, also known as a Special Non-Immigrant Visa, to legally engage in gainful employment in the country.

Under Section 47a2 of the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, a Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) visa is usually granted to foreign employees working for Regional Headquarters, Regional Operating Headquarters, or employees of PEZA and BOI-registered companies.

The 13(a) Non-Quota Visa is issued to foreign nationals who have contracted a valid marriage, recognized by Philippine laws, with a Filipino citizen.  The petitioner of the visa should be the Filipino spouse. While waiting for the visa approval, the Applicant can stay in the Philippines under a tourist visa and extend the status as applicable. 

The Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) entitles the holder to reside during his lifetime in the Philippines, permitting multiple entry privileges, so long as the requirements of the visa remain in the Philippines. The SRRV is issued by the Bureau of Immigration upon endorsement of the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA). The SRRV program of the PRA requires the foreign national to have a certain amount of deposit in any PRA-accredited bank in the Philippines. 

 The Special Investor Resident Visa (SIRV) entitles the holder to reside indefinitely in the Philippines, permitting multiple entry privileges, so long as his investments remain in the Philippines. The SIRV is issued by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) upon endorsement of the Board of Investments.
